A New Mixed Formulation for Elasticity

چکیده
In this paper we present a new mixed variational formulation for the problem of linear elastostatics. Our formulation is very similar to the classical HellingerReissner formulation, but appears superior for finite element discretization. To make plain the relation between the Hellinger-Reissner formulation and the present one, we consider first an elastic body occupying a region g? in Euclidean n-space ( n = 2 or 3) subject to given body forces f and whose displacement g on F 0 R is known. The Hellinger-Reissner principle seeks a saddle-point of the quadratic functional

On Interior Penalty And Mixed Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Elasticity
In this paper, we review existing discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for elasticity and introduce a new formulation based on mixed finite elements. We highlight the subtle and important differences between Interior Penalty (IP) and mixed FEM based methods. In the mixed method for elasticity, choices of function spaces for approximating primal and dual variable is non-trivial for two main reaso...
متن کاملA New Recursive Formulation for the Mixed Redundancy Strategy in Reliability Optimization Problems
One of the common approaches for improving the reliability of a specific system is to use parallel redundant components in subsystems. This approach, which is known as the redundancy allocation problem (RAP), includes the simultaneous selection of the component type and its level for each subsystem in order to maximize the system reliability.Traditionally, there are two redundancy strategies, n...
متن کاملOn finite element formulations for nearly incompressible linear elasticity
In this paper we present a mixed stabilized finite element formulation that does not lock and also does not exhibit unphysical oscillations near the incompressible limit. The new mixed formulation is based on a multiscale variational principle and is presented in two different forms. In the first form the displacement field is decomposed into two scales, coarse-scale and fine-scale, and the fin...
متن کاملAdaptive multigrid solution for mixed finite elements in 2-dimensional linear elasticity
We explain the implementation of adaptive multigrid methods for mixed finite element in its hybrid formulation using interelement Lagrange multipliers and static condensation. We apply this method to problems in linear elasticity using the stabilized BDM elements introduced by STENBERG. Therefore, a new type of grid transfer and a new error indicator is introduced. Numerical examples on unstruc...
متن کاملExplicit mixed strain-displacement finite elements for compressible and quasi-incompressible elasticity and plasticity
This paper presents an explicit mixed finite element formulation to address compressible and quasi-incompressible problems in elasticity and plasticity. This implies that the numerical solution only involves diagonal systems of equations. The formulation uses independent and equal interpolation of displacements and strains, stabilized by variational subscales (VMS). A displacement sub-scale is ...
